I recently visited Savannah, Georgia, on a weekend trip from where I live in Charleston, SC, and was very impressed with the Southern charm of the city. While I think there are more things to do in Charleston, (and the food is better here) Savannah is still a beautiful city and I enjoyed my time there. Savannah is full of history and beautiful architecture, and it’s definitely worth a visit. Here are my suggestions for the best things to do in Savannah.

The Best Things To Do In Savannah

1. Visit The Farmer’s Market In Forsyth Park

Forsyth Park is a delight to walk through at any time, though I especially enjoyed my visit during the Saturday Farmer’s market. You’ve probably seen the fountain in many photos of Savannah. This 30 acre park has plenty of room to stretch out. And if you’re visiting in the spring when the flowers are blooming, then it’s an absolute must.

2. Walk Bonaventure Cemetery

Bonaventure Cemetery is a traditional 100 acre Victorian cemetery, and is just outside the Historic District. It was my favorite of things to do in Savannah, and was a profound and beautiful experience. This cemetery is full of history and haunting beauty, and you will be humbled by the Spanish hanging moss which speaks of ghosts amid the moving inscriptions on the tombstones.

3. Stroll Down River Street At Sunset

I wasn’t a big fan of the shops on River Street, as they were too touristy for my taste, but I did enjoy walking along the river at sunset and seeing the views. There are also riverboat tours you can take, if you want to enjoy the river by boat.

4. Eat Delicious Southern Food

Savannah is known for its Southern food, and the best meal I had was at Common Restaurant. I got there during happy hour to enjoy 50 cent oysters and $5 bourbon mules, and then finished with a stunning dinner of white lobster gumbo over grits. It was so good.

5. Wander Around The Historic District

Wandering around the historic district was also one of my favorite things to do in Savannah. It was so dreamy and was the part of Savannah I most envisioned it would be like. Beautiful houses, brick streets, flowers, and garden sculptures. I wandered around this section for hours.

6. Do Some Eccentric Shopping In The Starland District

I absolutely hated the shopping on Broughton Street which was full of mostly chain stores and tourists. I was relieved when I found the vintage and eclectic Starland district with shops full of local products made by artists. My favorite place was Superbloom with its superfood lattes and artist boutique. I had a rose lavender latte here and found a great essential oil roller to treat headaches.

Just around the corner is Starland Strange which serves decadent ice cream cones such as ones topped with cotton candy. They also have a boutique which sells local products.

7. Drive The Oak Tree Avenue At Wormsloe Historic Site

Driving down the alley of over 300 live oaks at Wormsloe Historic Site was quite breathtaking. Wormsloe is Georgia’s oldest plantation, and is the former home of Noble Jones. The remnants of the Jones home was fascinating to me, as it was made of tabby, a mixture of sand, lime, and oyster shells.

8. Visit The Beach At Tybee Island

Tybee Island is just 20 minutes from Savannah, and this Georgia barrier island has beautiful beaches if you need some sun and sand to make your vacation feel complete. There are cute beach swings set along the beach which make for a perfect view of the waves.
